Brigid Harrington Quoted in “Penn Creates New Title VI Center. Will Other Colleges Follow?” in Inside Higher Ed

The University of Pennsylvania will open a new center to ensure it fulfills its obligations under federal law to protect students from discrimination and harassment. Opening a center to handle shared ancestry complaints such as those alleging antisemitism is an indication that colleges are turning to their Title IX playbooks to comply with Title VI. Brigid Harrington spoke with Inside Higher Ed about the development.

Brigid noted that universities don’t necessarily need to develop Title VI offices to fulfill their obligations under federal law. “Look at what you already have and use what works,” she said. “Think about why you would be treating race discrimination differently than gender discrimination, and if you don’t have an answer for that, maybe you should change how you treat race discrimination” to come in line with the institution’s Title IX policies.
