Trans Public Accommodation Bill Soars in Support but Remains in Legislative Limbo
Transgender Public Accommodation Bill activists have secured the support of nearly 200 businesses and organizations, more than a dozen police chiefs, and the state’s congressional delegation. Still, despite the Bill’s rapidly growing support in Massachusetts, which, as of late includes New England’s top professional sports teams, the Transgender Public Accommodation Bill still sits in limbo while Speaker Robert DeLeo works to ensure a veto-proof level of support in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
According to the State House News Service, Speaker DeLeo told reporters in early February that while he’s in full support of the legislation, he is talking with lawmakers who have specific concerns about the bill and suggested last week that he wants to see whether there’s enough support to override the veto, should Governor Baker refuse to sign it. Those concerns are not unfounded, as Governor Baker has not yet said whether he would sign the bill and continues to punt on the issue. During an unsuccessful bid for governor in 2010, he dismissed similar legislation and pledged to veto it.
The waiting game continues, and this Bill remains one to watch.
